About St. Francis College (New York)

St. Francis College is a private, coeducational college located in Brooklyn Heights, which is a neighborhood within the New York City borough of Brooklyn, also referred to as "Brooklyn Village", since 1834, becoming a prominent area in Brooklyn, housing a population estimated at a number of nearly 22 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.

St. Francis College was founded by the Franciscan friars, in 1859, as the St. Francis Academy, being the 1st private school in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. The college, which was first opened to educate the boys of the diocese, quickly grew, and in 1884, about 25 years later, from its founding, the institution has received permission from the state legislature to ‘’establish a Literary College’’ under its current name, having today the power to confer diplomas, honors, and degrees.

St. Francis College has been ranked as one of the more diverse colleges in USA, by New York Times, more than 2000 full-time students and over 400 part-time students, from 80 countries attending its classes. St. Francis has set high goals, and it is dedicated in promoting academic excellence, advancing a thriving intellectual community, supporting student life and the development of the whole person and enabling the transition from student to citizen of the world. Among the educational programs offered at St. Francis there are 72 programs and majors from a five year combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Program in Accounting to Sports Management, Communication, Arts and Education.

Its athletic teams are known as the St. Francis (NY) Terriers, who compete in NCAA’s Northeast Conference, participating on 19 Division I athletic teams, including men’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and he nationally ranked Men’s Water Polo team, also fielding teams in cross country, water polo, bowling, fencing, tennis and swimming.
